Allows you to line up the center of a two- or three-needle stitch with an existing seam, for straighter, more accurate stitches. Excellent for sportswear, conferring extra strength on seams that are exposed to a lot of strain. Use it to tack down already-sewn seams, or to add a decorative finish.
